Strategic Economic Development Plan & Housing Study

City of Springfield Announces Strategic Economic Development Plan and Housing Study Results

The City of Springfield, in partnership with Region Nine Development Commission, is pleased to announce the completion of the Strategic Economic Development Plan and Housing Study.

This initiative was launched to better understand Springfield’s economic strengths, challenges, and opportunities, while also addressing one of the community’s most pressing needs—housing. The plan provides a roadmap for growth, investment, and community vitality in the years ahead.

Key highlights of the study include:

  • Economic Development Priorities: Strategies to strengthen existing businesses, attract new investment, and create opportunities for workforce growth.
  • Housing Needs Assessment: A clear picture of Springfield’s current housing market, including the need for diverse housing options that meet the demands of families, seniors, and young professionals.
  • Community Input: Insights gathered from residents, business owners, and stakeholders to ensure the plan reflects the goals and values of Springfield’s people.
  • Action Steps: Practical strategies and projects that can be implemented by the city, community partners, and private investors to foster long-term success.

The plan will be used to promote Springfield’s strengths and opportunities to potential businesses and developers, and to support future grant applications that aid in development.

The city was able to complete these studies with grant support from the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation (SMIF), whose investment made this important work possible.

The city thanks Region Nine Development Commission and SMIF for their partnership and expertise in helping shape a clear vision for Springfield’s future.
